GLP-1 Receptor Agonist
Saxenda Lawsuits
What is Saxenda?
Saxenda (liraglutide) is a daily injectable prescription medication approved by the FDA in 2014 for chronic weight management. Manufactured by Novo Nordisk, Saxenda was one of the first GLP-1 receptor agonists specifically approved for weight loss rather than diabetes management.
How Saxenda Works
Saxenda works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates appetite and food intake. Like other GLP-1 agonists, it also slows gastric emptying, which can contribute to gastrointestinal side effects. Unlike the weekly formulations of Ozempic and Wegovy, Saxenda requires daily injections.
Severe Injuries Associated with Saxenda
Patients taking Saxenda have reported serious, sometimes permanent injuries:
- Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas that can be life-threatening and may cause permanent organ damage.
- Gallbladder Disease: A significant percentage of Saxenda patients develop gallstones or gallbladder inflammation, frequently requiring surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).
- Thyroid C-cell Tumors: Including medullary thyroid carcinoma, a rare but serious form of thyroid cancer.
- Kidney Failure: Acute kidney injury, sometimes requiring dialysis.
- Severe Gastrointestinal Issues: Including persistent nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Legal Claims Against Novo Nordisk
Saxenda lawsuits have been filed against Novo Nordisk alleging that the company failed to adequately warn about the risks of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and thyroid tumors. Many patients required gallbladder removal surgery, a procedure with lifelong implications for digestion and diet.
Cases are being consolidated in multi-district litigation to streamline the legal process.

FDA Warnings
