GLP-1 Receptor Agonist
Wegovy Lawsuits
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medication approved by the FDA in 2021 for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight conditions. Manufactured by Novo Nordisk, Wegovy contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic — semaglutide — but at a higher dose specifically formulated for weight loss.
How Wegovy Works
Like Ozempic, Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking the effects of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone. It suppresses appetite, slows gastric emptying, and helps regulate blood sugar. The higher dose of semaglutide in Wegovy means patients may be exposed to an even greater risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
Severe Injuries Associated with Wegovy
Patients taking Wegovy have reported serious, sometimes life-altering injuries:
- Gastroparesis: Stomach paralysis that can cause severe nausea, vomiting, and malnutrition. Some patients require feeding tubes or gastric pacemakers.
- Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas that can be life-threatening and may cause permanent organ damage.
- Bowel Obstruction: Blockage of the intestines that may require emergency surgery.
- Gallbladder Disease: Gallstones and inflammation that frequently require surgical removal of the gallbladder.
- Thyroid Tumors: Including medullary thyroid carcinoma, a rare but serious form of thyroid cancer.
Legal Claims Against Novo Nordisk
Wegovy lawsuits are being filed alongside Ozempic claims, as both medications contain the same active ingredient. Plaintiffs allege that Novo Nordisk knew or should have known about the risks of severe gastrointestinal injuries but failed to adequately warn patients and healthcare providers.
The consolidation of Wegovy and Ozempic cases into multi-district litigation is expected to streamline the legal process and establish precedent for future claims.
Known Side Effects
Gastroparesis, Pancreatitis, Bowel Obstruction, Gallbladder Disease, Thyroid Tumors, Severe Gastrointestinal Issues
FDA Warnings
The FDA requires Wegovy to carry a boxed warning regarding the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. Additional warnings cover pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal disorders, kidney failure, and diabetic retinopathy complications. The agency continues to monitor adverse event reports.
Legal Status
Wegovy lawsuits are being consolidated with Ozempic litigation in multi-district litigation. Claims allege Novo Nordisk failed to adequately warn about severe gastrointestinal side effects including gastroparesis and bowel obstruction.
